Canker sores are unsightly and very painful. Instead of finding a way to get rid of one it makes much more sense to try to prevent them before they start. The true cause of canker sores is unknown. It is believed they can be caused by a variety of things.

It is believed that these dental mouth sores may be the result of food allergies or stress. If you suffer from canker sores regularly, it may be wise to visit your doctor to determine the real cause. Other factors that can account to having these irritating sores are dental mouth trauma, acidic or spicy food and drinks, certain health conditions. Eating healthy nutritious meals is important. Eating a well balanced diet to ensure your body has an adequate amount of nutrients is essential.

The next step is follow good oral hygiene habits. Brush teeth regularly, floss properly – do not force the floss between teeth, and rinse your mouth after eating meals in order to ensure loose food particles are removed. Getting adequate rest is also important. Getting a good night’s sleep is important to the immune system.

Several natural products are known for the benefits in promoting good oral health care and preventing infections and sores. The essential oils of almond, spearmint and peppermint are known for their oral health benefits.

Following good daily habits are essential in preventing dreadful, and painful, dental mouth sores. While preventing canker sores, you are also building healthy gums and teeth and preventing abscesses and other oral infections.

Imagine you are getting ready to go to work. You have the perfect outfit to wear. Then, you go to breakfast and you start eating your food when suddenly you notice a small sore in your mouth. You try to figure out how to treat them but you have no idea what would work. If you have ever had an experience like this with mouth ulcers, you realize how frustrating and annoying canker sores can be. The following is are some suggestions on how to treat them. This information applies to cold sores as well.

Rinse your mouth with alkaline mouth wash such as glycothymoline. Alkalizing the area can help to reduce the pain of canker sores. Or, by contrast, you could mix one part hydrogen peroxide with one part water then use a cotton ball or a Q-tip to gently dab the liquid directly onto the mouth ulcer. Do not swallow the hydrogen peroxide and water mixture.

Put ice into your mouth. Having something cold such as ice can relieve the pain when you have a canker sore.

Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush. Avoid aggravating the sore when you brush your teeth. That will give the it a chance to heal.

Eat alkaline foods. Avoid sugar, acidic foods, acidic sauces, carbonated drinks, liquor, and yeast food for a few days until it heals.

Knowing how to treat canker sores when they happen is important. Granted, if the mouth ulcer becomes infected, it might be necessary to go to see a physician who might prescribe medication such as Tetracycline or Acyclovir.

Although they are relatively a mild oral problem, canker sores can be quite a pain. They usually appear from seemingly out of nowhere, they become really annoyingly painful and difficult to tolerate, and they take a really long time to heal.

The bad news is that there is still no instant cure for canker sores. The good news is that you can still do something about it. This article discusses some of the things that you can do to 1) ease the pain and 2) shorten the healing time.

Prevention

The best approach in our fight against canker sores is still, of course, prevention. It is much less of an annoying problem if we can prevent it from happening, right? However, methods of preventing it from happening will vary from person to person depending on how it is triggered most of the time for each person. By identifying the precursors or the triggers, we can then take measures to preventing those triggers from happening in the first place. If your tongue gets canker sores after eating too much food that is rough and abrasive, then extra care in eating such food may help reduce the chances of getting canker lesions.

DIY Home Remedies

For minor cases, there are simple home-made concoctions that you can use to relieve the pain associated with having canker sores and to reduce the time of healing. One of the most basic ways to do that is to make a saltwater mixture to rinse your mouth with. This will provide pain-relief and will provide antiseptic action that will reduce the number of bacteria in your mouth, thereby speeding up healing time.

You can also create a paste application using baking soda and salt and cover the lesion with it. This will also provide a bit of pain relief and speed up the time it takes to heal.

Another home-made treatment can be made up using hydrogen peroxide and water (1 to 1 solution). It will provide the same effect as the above suggestions if used as mouth rinsing solution.

Over-the-counter Solutions

Furthermore, if you are not too keen on going the DIY route, you could just buy one of those OTC mouth rinsing solutions that work quite as well, if not better than the previous suggestions. I usually use one of those mild Iodine solution mouth wash. It is just not advisable to use them too often because of the danger of ingestion.

In any of the above treatment suggestions, always remember to spit out the mouth rinse or gargles and not swallow it. These treatments are not meant to be ingested.

Finding treatment for minor canker sores is relatively easy. There are a lot of home remedies or OTC treatment suggestions out there that you can consider. However, as is the case when it comes to health, if symptoms persist, better consult a professional.

Canker sores and mouth ulcers can be aggravating and frustrating, as well as a little embarrassing. Knowing how to get rid of canker sores fast can relieve you of needless stress. Not only do cold sores cause physical pain, they can cause emotional pain as well. The last thing you need before a big date, the first day of work or some other momentous occasion, is for a sore to suddenly appear on your lip. Cold sores may make you feel less confident and a bit insecure. While there are a number of over the counter remedies designed for combating canker blisters and cold sores, tackling the problem naturally can often be just as effective.

Apply Ice

The first thing you should do when you notice a canker sore is apply ice at least a couple of times a day, more often if possible. This will help reduce any swelling and infection that may occur.

Keep the Sore Moist

You should also keep the cold sore moist by applying petroleum jelly frequently. If a sore is allowed to dry out, it can become extremely painful and irritated. It will also likely be more evident, as irritation will cause it to swell and become red.

Avoid Certain Foods

When you are sporting a sore on your lip, you should avoid salty or acidic foods. Not only will these foods cause the cold sore to burn like fire, they will cause further inflammation and irritation.

Knowing how to get rid of canker sores fast can provide both peace of mind and confidence when a cold sore appears. These simple methods of treating canker sores will not bring about a miraculous overnight recovery, but they will generally be just as effective as any over the counter remedy if done consistently.

Most canker sores go away on their own within one-to-two weeks. In the meantime, there are things that you can do to alleviate the pain and promote healing.

If you already have a canker sore then stop using toothpaste that contains sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Studies have shown that toothpaste contains SLS. SLS dries out the mucus lining in your mouth that protects against canker sores.

Over-the-counter and prescriptions medications can also be utilized to promote the healing of this dental condition. Many oral gels contain a numbing agent that when applied directly to the irritated sores helps numb the area and alleviates the pain. A dentist or a doctor may prescribe an anti-inflammatory gel or mouthwash. These steroid anti-inflammatory medications reduce the inflammation of the sores.

In the meantime, you can take care of your dental mouth sores by avoiding acidic, spicy, and hard foods. These types of foods aggravate the canker sore and delay the healing time. Eat your food in smaller bites and eat soft foods. This alleviates additional irritation to the sores. Use a straw when drinking cold beverages to avoid making contact with a canker sore. When cold liquids touch a canker sore it produces a stinging sensation. Drinking through a straw helps you control the flow of liquids and prevent additional irritation.

Lastly, be gentle when brushing your teeth. Brushing your teeth hard and quickly can cause you to stab your cheeks and gums. This damages the mucus lining in your mouth. If you already have a dental mouth sore that pain will be immense when your toothbrush touches it. Brushing your teeth too hard will prolong the healing process.

For most people the question of how to get rid of a canker sore is about canker sore pain relief, because their canker sore episode falls into the "minor" category. Palliative care for cankers usually involves a painkiller containing the local anesthetic benzocaine. And a good piece of advice for avoiding future cankers? Brush your teeth and floss regularly, just like the dentist said.

The question of how to get rid of a canker sore is more complicated than you might think. Some types of canker sores, known as “complex,” can bring sores larger than 10 millimeters in diameter, and which frequently leave scars when they finally heal. Another strain of cankers, called “herpetiform,” occurs often in women and is characterized by groups of sores on tongue, cheek, and the roof of the mouth. As you might imagine, these can be extremely painful, although the good thing (if there is one) is that they generally heal within a month or so.

But the fact remains that most people looking for how to get rid of a canker sore do not fall into either of these categories. And since few of us know what ailments will strike us ahead of time, chances are if you’re reading this article you already have these on your tongue-and-cheek (bad pun intended). Well, most treatment for cankers is palliative rather than curative, meaning that it just focuses on reducing pain rather than finding a cure. If cankers were a fatal disease that would be bad news for you, but as it is you’ll probably heal in no more than two weeks.

So, you want to know which of the myriad of canker treatment choices at the drugstore to use? Here’s the skinny. The best option for you is probably one of the over-the-counter ointments that you put directly on the canker sore with a cotton swab or squirt right out of the tube. Just look on the list of active ingredients for benzocaine-a local anesthetic that should be in there at a concentration of about 20%. A list of the commercially available medicines that have benzocaine in them would be overkill here, but a few of the most popular are Orabase, Orajel, and Anbesol.

Once you’ve figured out how to get rid of canker sores, you’ll want to know how to keep them from coming back. Turns out that listening to your dentist might be a good idea in this department, as regular brushing and flossing keeps your mouth free of debris that can trigger a canker sore. And another thing about toothpaste: if you’re breaking out in cankers more than three or four times a year, you might check to see if your toothpaste contains the compound sodium lauryl sulfate. It’s a known skin irritant that is used in floor cleaners in higher concentration, and there is some evidence that links it to repeated canker sores. Check with your doctor to see if there are other risk factors you might be able to eliminate from your life.

Sometimes you will wonder how a small thing can have such a significant effect in your overall well-being. Take, for example, the case of the canker sore. Canker sores are tiny lesions that appear inside the mouth; usually inside the cheeks and lips, on the top and bottom surfaces of the tongue or on gum tissue. They appear yellowish or whitish in color and are surrounded by reddish tissue. They are often annoyingly painful and take quite a while to heal especially if left untreated.

Minor occurrences usually take about two weeks to heal without intervention. Application of simple home remedies will usually speed up the healing time and most importantly, will reduce the pain, at least for some time.

One of the best ways to deal with canker sores is to prevent it from happening or to reduce its occurrence. To do this, you will need to discover what triggers it. Many people seem to think that it comes out of nowhere. I do not believe that is true. In my case, I find that it usually follows after I bump the inside portion of my lips against my teeth. The area inside the lips or mouth that got knocked against your teeth will usually become a little sore and will usually have a little break on the lining of your mouth which, if not treated, will develop into a full-blown canker sore which will heal only after a couple of weeks.

Hence, if you hate painful canker sores then you should prevent such things from happening. But if it does happen and you wound the inside of your mouth somehow, immediately apply antiseptic treatment to prevent it from getting infected and becoming a canker sore.

Home remedies of canker sores include saltwater solution (used as gargle) and sodium bicarbonate (used as paste application), hydrogen peroxide solution (as gargle) and over-the-counter oral mouth rinse products. The objectives of these treatments are to reduce bacterial growth in your mouth to speed up healing time and to reduce the pain. These treatments are not meant to be ingested so be sure to spit them all out after rinsing your mouth with them.

For more severe cases that may happen, it is advised that you go to a dentist for consultation. Severe sores are characterized by bigger and multiple lesions that are more painful and takes longer to heal. You may get prescribed some antibiotics and some steroidal medicines (e.g. corticoid steroids).

As always when it comes to dental problems, it is always best to consult the dentist regardless of whether the problem is minor or not.

A cold sore is the outward symptom of an outbreak of (and previous infection by) the herpes simplex virus, probably the type 1 strain. Cold sores are the most common form of herpes simplex infection and are otherwise known as “herpes labialis”, which is the infection that occurs when the virus comes into contact with oral mucosa tissue or abraded (scratched) skin.

A canker sore, otherwise known as an aphthous ulcer, is a type of painful oral ulcer that typically occurs inside the mouth (normally on the inside of the lip) or in the upper throat. The disease is also known as “aphthous stomatitis”, and when you keep getting it over and over again (it keeps recurring), that particular condition is known as RAS: Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis, and it’s one of the most common oral conditions since around 10% of the population is afflicted with it.

The fastest way to distinguish a canker sore from a cold sore, 98% of the time straight away, is this: cold sores almost always occur outside the mouth, it’s extremely rare that they are ever found inside, whereas canker sores always occur inside the mouth.

Canker sores are generally classified into three groups based on size:

1. Minor sores have a diameter of 1-10mm. They are the most common (80% of all canker sores) and usually only last about 7 to 10 days.

2. Major sores (10% of canker sores) will have a diameter of more than 10mm and they may take anywhere from 10 to 30 days to heal. Also, they might leave a scar after they heal.

3. Herpetiform ulcers (the other 10% of all canker sores) are formed by a cluster of multiple small individual sores (less than 3mm each). They also normally heal within 7-10 days.

The most effective current treatment of cankers sores has found to be Vitamin B-12, which is just as effective regardless of whether or not there is a B-12 deficiency present in the patient. Also, anti-biotics and anti-virals are sometimes effective, depending on the situation, but these are rarely prescribed. One of the best things to do to avoid canker sores is to avoid spicy foods and to practice proper dental hygiene on a regular basis.

One of the easiest ways to avoid confusing the two is to simply look at cold sores pictures and pictures of canker sores and compare them with what you’ve got, if you’ll click the above link you’ll be taken to a site with pictures and information about both so you can determine what you’ve got and how you should treat it.

Author: Andrew Kawaski
Article Source: EzineArticles.com
Provided by: Wordpress plugin Guest Blogger

Stop the vicious cycle of canker sores, use a natural product to clear your mouth of these painful pests.

It happens to just about everyone at least once in their life. An outbreak of canker sores in the mouth that are accompanied by localized burning pain, exacerbated by eating, drinking and simply talking. When they do occur, they may seem to last forever and time seems to be only sure cure. Although relief for the pain is available, they will usually not disappear until they have run their natural course.

Causes of canker sores remain a mystery although it is commonly believed that stress, nutritional deficiencies and even allergies may be contributing causes. There are those who believe that the susceptibility of canker sores is hereditary while others believe they can be made worse by some of the products being used to promote effective oral hygiene.

Faqs On Canker Sores

1)	Some of the chemicals used in toothpaste and mouthwash can actually damage the sensitive lining of the mouth, leaving it open for infections such as canker sores.

2)	They can appear as small red bumps, about a third of an inch in length or smaller or in larger ulcer-type sores.

3)	The pain that accompanies canker sores can be tremendous considering the size of these irritating infections.

While some only experience canker sores a few times during their life, others may suffer numerous frequent outbreaks. By treating the mouth naturally, it’s possible to reduce the number of outbreaks as well as the severity and length of their presence. Using natural products in oral hygiene can help protect the mouth against infection.

Using baking soda for oral care can help reduce the outbreaks of canker sores as well as help promote the healing of sores that are already present. Keeping the mouth clean before an outbreak can help prevent them, but more importantly the sores can be opened by rubbing against the teeth and keeping them clean will help in the healing process.

While canker sores are painful regardless of their location within the mouth, if they are located on the side of the tongue they can be irritated by contact with the teeth. Those that form in the throat are more likely to become worse due to swallowing. Using a salt-water rinse can help keep the mouth clean and promote healing. If these mouth sores continue to be a problem, tougher measures may be needed.

To reduce the pain topical gels used for teething infants or adult toothaches, can help temporarily eliminate the pain and many of their ingredients can also defend the area against further infection. Using prescription medication will be prescribed by the doctor if the canker sores are severe and appear to be resisting natural methods.

Vitamin C and B complex vitamins not only help prevent the ulcers caused by nutritional deficiency but have been shown to speed the healing of canker sores. During an outbreak, certain foods should be avoided such as hard, crunchy snacks and even raw vegetables such as carrots and celery can aggravate the sores in the mouth. While they will usually heal themselves over time, dealing with the irritation can be painful, but through the use of many natural products, the effects can be limited.
